Gueipul’s passion for filmmaking began at an early age, inspired by his father, a skilled handyman and experimenter from Aceh who eventually became the host of a popular DIY television program on TVRI, Indonesia’s national television network.

As a child, Ipul sometimes accompanied his father to the studio. Watching the production process firsthand sparked his fascination with filmmaking and gave him an early glimpse into the world behind the camera.

His love for cinema grew through Layar Tanceb, Indonesia’s traditional outdoor cinema. The free screenings became a regular part of his childhood, inspiring him to dream of making films himself. With whatever materials he could find, he built a simple wooden projector and collected fragments of burned film left behind after screenings, creating his own small cinema at home to share with other kids in the neighborhood.

Unable to afford film school at the time, Ipul began learning through whatever opportunities were available to him. His father eventually bought him a second-hand Sony CCD-V110 Video8 handycam, giving him his first real tool to experiment with filmmaking.

He started filming music concerts, initially hoping that the footage might earn him free access to the shows. After numerous attempts, he eventually met DEWA 19, one of Indonesia’s most influential bands. They invited him to join their tour and document their concerts, which later led to opportunities to work on their music videos.

That experience marked the beginning of his professional journey.

A few years later, Reny Fernandez Music videos director introduced Ipul to Indonesian famous DoP  Agung Dewantaro. After an internship and learning directly from him, Ipul began working professionally in television commercials and continued developing his craft through years of experience on set.

Over more than 12 years in the industry, he has worked across commercials, music videos, short films, and documentaries. Along the way, he has also developed experience in underwater cinematography, aerial filmmaking, and travel photography.

For Ipul, the journey of learning has never really stopped. After building his career through hands-on experience, he continues to seek new perspectives and ways to deepen his understanding of cinema. His next chapter includes a return to formal film education abroad, continuing the journey that began with a homemade projector, fragments of film, and a childhood fascination with the world behind the camera.

Outside of filmmaking, Ipul finds inspiration through surfing, music, travel, cinema, and continuous learning. These experiences often shape the way he observes people, places, light, movement, and everyday life.
